Partnering with High-Q UK (IRATA O/T 8149), 5th Point will be hosting another IOSH Safety Management in the Rope Access and Working at Height Industry Course this July.

In recent years there has been an increase in the number of serious rope access incidents, and this has brought attention from regulators. The HSE in the UK observed in a letter to IRATA that improvements should be made in the areas of:

  • Planning, organisation and control of industrial rope access to provide safe systems of work;
  • Supervision, competence and human and organisational factors in rope access operations;
  • Audit, monitoring and review of compliance with recognised good practice.

In response to this clear industry need, High Q UK have developed a benchmark health and safety competence for Managers and Supervisors who are responsible for rope access and work at height projects.

The course addresses those areas of concern noted by the HSE, and also addresses the competence requirements detailed in the IRATA ICOP and ISO 22846, but that are not currently addressed by the IRATA Level 3 training scheme. Particular emphasis will be on planning work, to ensure that candidates are meeting their legal obligations and can follow established best practice.

The course is approved by the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), and successful participants receive an IOSH certificate. IOSH are the world leader in health and safety training, and over 179,000 take their courses every year.

Safety Management in the Rope Access and Work at Height Industry

Syllabus

Aims:

To establish a benchmark health and safety competence for those Managers and Supervisors who are responsible for rope access and work at height projects. The course aims to address those areas of competence that are detailed in the IRATA ICOP and ISO 22846, and that are not currently addressed by the IRATA Level 3 training scheme. Particular emphasis will be on planning work, to ensure that candidates are meeting their legal requirements and can follow established best practice.

Course Pre-requisites:

  • IRATA Level 2 or 3 (a pre-requisite for an IRATA Level 3 is at least 2 years industrial work at height experience);
  • or, a manager or supervisor with at least 3 years industrial work at height experience

Objectives:

  • Learners will demonstrate a working understanding of relevant legislation
  • Learners will demonstrate a working understanding of Plan, Do, Check, Act management framework
  • Learners will demonstrate an ability to identify work at height hazards
  • Learners will demonstrate an ability to choose and apply suitable control measures
  • Learners will demonstrate an ability to analyse a range of work at height situations and create the ALARP work solution

Course modules:

  1. Introducing Safety Management in the Rope Access and Work at Height Industry;
  2. Work at height and the law;
  3. Risk Management (Plan);
  4. Work at height in practice: selection of methods and developing a safe method of work (Plan/Do);
  5. Managing the work (Do);
  6. Reviewing the effectiveness of workplace safe system of work arrangements (Check);
  7. Continual improvement (Act).

Assessment methods:

Formative assessment:

Will be used throughout the course, with candidates completing exercises and tasks in the student workbook, and being provided with ongoing feedback to help candidates identify their strengths and weaknesses.

Summative assessment:

Student learning and the award of certificate will be evaluated using a combination of written paper and practical exercises:

  • A written paper covering all modules will be conducted at the end of the course (the questions will be short format questions including multiple choice, drag and drop, missing word)
  • Hazard identification exercises using examples from or near to the training venue and/or photographs of typical worksites
  • Risk assessment exercise including the quantitative assessment of different control measures to assess the ALARP measure (in accordance with the Work at Height Regulations) using examples from or near to the training venue and/or photographs of typical worksites
  • Developing a safe method of work (based on the method evaluated as ALARP in the risk assessment exercise)

Course Materials

All equipment and course materials will be provided.  You will need to wear comfortable clothing and sturdy work boots; we recommend steel caps.

Lunch and refreshments are provided.

 

Training schedule

Hours of training will run between the hours of 08.00-16.00 each day.

 

Course fees

Full course including assessment and registration is $1000.00 AUD inclusive of GST. EARLY BIRD SPECIAL $900 (book by 1st April, 2024).To guarantee a place on the course you will need to pay the full amount. A receipt will be provided at the commencement of training.
